Minimising risks through responsible sourcing
The construction industry is realising the need to minimise the impacts that construction and the supply chain have on the environment and the society, both in the UK and all over the world. The event will present the new CIRIA handbook that will help organisations procure materials and products responsibly, thus managing potential impacts and issues within local and global supply chains.
Background
The construction industry is increasingly keen to demonstrate that the purchased products and materials are responsibly sourced. Responsible sourcing is a way of managing and addressing environmental, social and ethical – and economic – issues within the supply chain, e.g. child labour, excessive use of resources, or greenhouse gas emissions. All the parties involved in project delivery have a role to play in the responsible sourcing of products and materials, from clients to designers and specifiers, through to suppliers and product manufacturers.
This event will launch the new CIRIA publication ‘Minimising risk through responsible sourcing. A handbook for the construction industry’ (C767), developed in collaboration with the Action Programme for Responsible and Ethical Sourcing (APRES) and a diverse range of key experts. The handbook will help parties involved in construction projects to procure materials and products responsibly and better understand what to look for in purchasing decisions to reduce risks. It provides a clear overview of the tools and methods to implement responsible sourcing, and highlights the impacts for a wide range of products, from aggregates to mechanical and electrical equipment. It is aimed at category managers, procurement professionals and suppliers, but is also a practical reference tool for many other professionals involved in purchasing decisions.
This launch event will also showcase practical experiences and case studies of leading experts and organisations, demonstrating the positive impacts and outcomes that the construction industry can achieve through the implementation of responsible sourcing policies and measures.
